Hello there! My name is Sam and I am a 20-year-old, completely self-taught bladesmith currently living and working in Olympia, Washington. I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area where I spent much of my youth exploring the great outdoors. When I was 13 years old I was lucky enough to discover what I was passionate about in life after my mom signed me and my twin brother up for a Groupon at an industrial arts studio. There we took an introductory course on basic metalworking skills, such as blacksmithing, welding, and foundry.
After this class, I desperately wanted to continue learning about metal, but I was unable to continue for a myriad of reasons. Tragically that same year, my dad, who inspired my passion for knives and nature, unexpectedly passed away. It was through that hardship that I set my mind to pursue what I loved and not let anything stand in my way. That event gave me the drive to be the best bladesmith I possibly could be.
I dedicated myself to becoming a master with what little resources I could muster at 13. I learned most of what I know from watching hundreds of hours of Youtube videos, online research, and the tried and true method of trial and error. It wasn’t easy and was seven years of growing through blood, sweat, and plenty of tears (and burns).
Today, I am bladesmithing full time and supporting myself and the lifestyle I want through it. I am still learning, and continue to refine my skills. In addition to smithing, I am committed to teaching and passing on what I have learned to others. It’s important to me to be able to provide an opportunity for people who desire to learn, as that's what I would have been so grateful for when I was in the same position.
I hope you find the same joy in your blade that I found in creating it. Whether it’s in the wilderness, in the kitchen, or in your back pocket, your blade continues to keep the fire burning.
